Phelan Green’s synthetic aviation fuel project at Saldanha Bay has become the first of six projects in South Africa’s initial green hydrogen development wave to reach final investment decision, moving the country’s hydrogen strategy from project development into construction planning and commercial ex*****on.
The milestone was confirmed at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, where South Africa’s government said Phelan Green had secured an offtake agreement and committed $100 million in equity. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with the first exports of electro-sustainable aviation fuel, or e-SAF, targeted for the first quarter of 2029.

Solar just overtook coal
A historic shift is underway in China’s energy system.
For the first time, China’s installed solar photovoltaic capacity has surpassed coal-fired power capacity.
By the end of July 2026:
Solar: 1.286 TW
Coal: 1.285 TW
That makes solar the country’s largest power source by installed capacity.
But there’s an important distinction: installed capacity is not the same as electricity generated.
Solar remains intermittent, while coal plants can operate for longer periods. From January to July, solar generated about 802.4 billion kWh, representing roughly 13% of China’s electricity consumption.
Still, the direction is unmistakable.
China’s rapid expansion of solar, alongside wind, storage and grid upgrades, is reshaping the world’s largest power system.
The bigger question is no longer whether renewables can scale.
It’s how quickly grids, storage and flexibility can evolve to make that renewable capacity fully usable.
A milestone for China—and a signal for the global energy transition.

This picture from Nigeria shows how
plastic waste has been turned into school chairs.
Not just recycled for the sake of recycling.
It has been given a second life as something useful, durable and meaningful.
And there is a bigger lesson here.
We often look at waste and ask:
How do we get rid of it?
Maybe the better question is:
What can we create from it?
That shift in thinking changes everything.
A plastic bottle is waste only until someone finds a better use for it.
The same principle applies to business, technology and even careers.
Innovation is not always about creating something completely new.
Sometimes, it is about looking at something ordinary and seeing a possibility that others missed.
Waste → Resource
Problem → Opportunity
Recycling → Education
That is what real innovation looks like.
Not always flashy.
Sometimes, it simply looks like a classroom full of children sitting on chairs made from yesterday’s waste.

Sustainability Is Bigger Than Carbon.
When people hear “sustainability,” the conversation often starts and ends with one metric: CO₂ emissions.
But the real picture is much bigger.
A sustainable economy must also consider social justice, food security, education, water replenishment, biodiversity, plastic reduction, circularity, regenerative design, and healthy oceans.
Why does this matter for the economy?
Because environmental systems and economic systems are inseparable.
Degraded ecosystems create economic risks.
Water scarcity disrupts businesses.
Biodiversity loss threatens supply chains.
Resource waste increases costs.
Social inequality weakens long-term resilience.
The opportunity is to move beyond simply “doing less harm” toward building systems that actively restore nature, strengthen communities, and create lasting economic value.
The future economy won’t be defined only by how much it grows.
It will be defined by what that growth protects, restores, and enables.
Sustainability isn’t a department. It’s the foundation of a resilient economy.
