Most leadership rooms are built for speed. Someone frames the problem, someone decides, everyone moves. That works, until the question is one nobody can answer alone.

Long before any of this was called leadership development, communities had a form for those questions. You gather everyone it concerns. You put the powerful on the outside of the conversation. And they do not speak until everything has been said.

In his new piece on our Substack, Rob Husband traces where this way of gathering comes from and what can happen in a circle like this:

You hear your own thinking clearly, because you have to say it out loud to people who are listening. And you notice the world is not shaped the way you assumed, because everyone else's experience is in the room with yours.

This is the work at Space2BeHuman. Not faster decisions – better ones, made by people who have actually heard each other.

We are hosting two days of it at Barleywood House near Bristol on 25–26 November: the Leadership Switch, an intimate retreat for leaders exploring the internal and external landscapes of leadership.

We notice we're okay when the list is okay. The kids. The budget. The partner. The work.

But the list keeps moving – and our sense of home moves with it.

What if there were another way to feel alright? One that comes from inside the body, not from anything outside it.

A place to come back to. A place that doesn't move when the list does.

Rob Husband's new essay on becoming your own home: https://rhusband.substack.com/p/outsourcing-my-ok-ness

When Rob Husband was 22, a stranger in a smoky Bristol pub told him: "There's something in you that knows that no matter what happens, you will be alright."

Decades later, he's still turning that sentence over. Because the truth is more tender: sometimes he believes it himself β€” and sometimes he outsources his OK-ness to everything outside him. The healthy budget. The happy kids. The well partner. The appreciated song.

But those things shift constantly, beyond our control. They're fickle. And when our sense of being okay rests on them, we're left in a quiet, frantic scramble for something to hold onto.

In a recent Emergence Room episode, Eveline van den Heuvel described feeling as though she had become her own home. That image stayed with Rob β€” and became this new piece of writing.

So here's the invitation: how would you live if you needed less outside-ness to build your OK-ness? If your own body had become the home where you feel safe?

A shifting list. A home that moves.

Most of us borrow our okay-ness from somewhere outside the body – the kids being happy, the partner being well, the work being praised, the budget being kind. The list never stops moving. We learn early that this is just how it works.

Rob Husband's new piece is for anyone who's started to wonder what it would take to stop outsourcing the feeling – and how you'd live if your body had become the home you keep looking for.
